Tuesday's Tidbits I have three children. When people ask me if I plan to have a fourth, I tell them I'm still thinking about it. But actually, I have a moderate amount of fear that I'll never be a mother of four. In my more paranoid moments, I fear becoming the laughing stock of my family when I end up pregnant with twins next time. You see, my mother has two older sisters who are identical twins. Top 10 Reasons 40 Doesn't Suck

When I turned 30, I discovered that “milestone” birthdays are just culturally imposed hogwash. I was happy to turn 30…it was almost like I was truly an adult, finally. Wife, mom, author, seminary graduate…with lots more like it to come. And it always helped that my BFF shared my exact birthday, so if it did get tough there was always someone there to join the misery. So now it's my 40th birthday. Rachel Held Evans would be the first to throw that scarf out and cut her hair short, but a literalist reading of the Bible says she can't if she wants to be a godly wife. I sure hope her husband, Dan, prays with his hands lifted up . . . wait. Nobody in my church requires any of that stuff. So how do we interpret passages from the Bible that talk about this? It's called hermeneutics : the rules by which we analyze scripture so that we can then apply the commands, principles, and timeless truths found within it.
