More Ancient Bible Texts Digitalized If my earlier post about the Codex Sinaiticus was interesting to you, then today's announcement regarding the Dead Sea Scrolls should light your fire, too. The Israel Antiquities Authority, which apparently owns the rights to the scrolls discovered in caves near the Dead Sea between 1947 and 1956, will digitally photograp h and scan the scrolls. The images will be posted on the Internet for anyone to see within the next two years. Some of the scrolls date back more than 2,000 years. The texts include, among other documents, the oldest written record of the Bible's Old Testament. I should expect there to be great excitement when these digital images start becoming available to viewers worldwide, instead of only to those selected scholars who have had the opportunity personally to inspect them. Perhaps now the entire text of the Bible can finally be preserved.

Headcoverings and Hair: What's Your Hermeneutic?

I sure hope her husband, Dan, prays with his hands lifted up . . . wait. Nobody in my church requires any of that stuff. So how do we interpret passages from the Bible that talk about this? It's called hermeneutics : the rules by which we analyze scripture so that we can then apply the commands, principles, and timeless truths found within it. Scholars have disagreed for centuries on the best way to do hermeneutics. And there are several steps involved. But biblical scholars do continue to uphold one hermeneutical rule: context is king. Tuesday's Tidbits I have three children. When people ask me if I plan to have a fourth, I tell them I'm still thinking about it. But actually, I have a moderate amount of fear that I'll never be a mother of four. In my more paranoid moments, I fear becoming the laughing stock of my family when I end up pregnant with twins next time. You see, my mother has two older sisters who are identical twins. She also has a younger brother and sister who are fraternal twins. Yes, my grandmother had one set of each, and two singletons, one of which was my mother, to round out the family. Mom would love nothing more than to have her daughter be the one to continue that lovely tradition. In fact, one day as we hypothesized about my telling her "Twins!", she said she'd come stay with us for awhile--after she recovered from her roll-on-the-floor laughing fit.
