Happy Birthday to Me

Yes, today is my birthday. I've jokingly said it's my first 39th birthday--the next few years will mark "anniversaries of my 39th." As if I'm denying that 40 is staring me down. But truly, I've gotten to the point of being glad for every day I'm alive. I embraced 30 with the knowledge that I was entering my prime decade of young motherhood. (Boy did that prediction come true!) I believe my 40s could very well be one of the most productive decades I experience, should the Lord give me those years. But for now I'll enjoy my final year of being 30-something. Life is good.

This morning on my way home from dropping my preschooler at preschool, the Lord spoke encouragement to me through the words of a song. He does that often. This one was so life-affirming, so joyful, it was like the refrain of my heart these days. So on this day where it seems everyone is affirming my life (thank you, FB folks!), I want to thank my Jesus for this life he's given me.

You Are Everything
by Matthew West
(partial lyrics)

You are everything that I live for
Everything that I can’t believe is happening
You’re standing right in front of me
With arms wide open
All I know is
Every day is filled with hope

You are everything that I believe for
And I can’t help but breathe you in
Breathe again
Feeling all this life within
Every single beat of my heart

You’re everything good in my life
Everything honest and true
And all of those stars hanging up in the sky
Could never shine brighter than You

You are everything that I live for
Everything that I can’t believe is happening
You’re standing right in front of me
With arms wide open
All I know is
Every day is filled with hope

You are everything that I believe for
And I can’t help but breathe you in
Breathe again
Feeling all this life within
Every single beat of my heart
You are
You are
Jesus, You are
You are everything

Tapestry Time

I'm so thankful for the women whom God put in my life to help grow me up in the Lord. Do you have anyone like that in your life? Read my Tapestry post here.

Searching for Answers

The caller ID said "New Orleans," unusual at my home. The reporter--that too was unusual--wanted to make sure I was the right Kelley Mathews, the one who had been a women's ministry director. He wondered if I'd comment for his article on the upcoming Right to Life Sunday (Jan. 23). Surprised, I said yes but could he call me the next day since I was running out the door to carpool. Such is my life. So he emailed me his phone number and a few questions to answer.

How the heck did he find me? Was it one of my books? A friend from Louisiana, or even a family member? My favorite guess was that he saw my web site.

But no, it wasn't anything so glamorous. He probably didn't even know I'd written anything. He was looking for women serving in ministry to comment on his article about the church's response to women who'd had abortions or who may be pregnant out of wedlock. Was the church a safe place for those women? How did the church help single mothers? Those sorts of rather loaded questions. Apparently not many church staff were willing to comment.

So he googled "former women's ministry director."

Was I the only name that popped up? I wonder...

Pomp and Circumstance

I've heard it from several friends and relatives: "I've never been to a wedding so beautiful and so much fun. It was the most awesomest wedding I've ever attended."

Think formal Catholic ceremony meets Mardi Gras. My little brother Derek married his long-time sweetheart, Becky, last week in New Orleans, LA. The event is worth more than a few lines, probably more like a few blogs. But for now, enjoy these glimpses.
